Cambridge CELTA

This course provides training for the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) - the most widely recognized international professional qualification for English language teachers.

Candidates vary in experience; some are recent university graduates while others are already qualified as teachers of other subjects.  Some are even professionals working in other fields possibly looking for a change in career. You need not have English as your first language provided that your awareness and competence in written and spoken English enables you to follow the course without hindrance.

CELTA FAQ:

What are the CELTA course fees?
The course fees are US $1600 plus $60 for two course books.

What are the course dates?
The Sin-El-Fil center course dates for 2010 are July 5-July 30 and August 9-September 3. These courses will run on a full-time intensive basis which means they will be in session Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the 4 consecutive weeks of the course.

Do you have a pre-selection process for candidates to be admitted in your program?
Yes, you must complete an application and pre-interview task in your own handwriting and may subsequently have an oral interview with our in-house CELTA trainer (can be done by phone for candidates outside of Lebanon).

What is the average class size?
We are allowed to accept up to a maximum of 12 candidates on each course and our courses usually have between 10-12 candidates.

Do you offer any post-graduation employment placements or advice in schools within Lebanon or abroad?
While we don’t offer any formal placement service, we do occasionally hire successful CELTA candidates to work in our centers around Lebanon. It should be noted, however, that this is by no means a guarantee of employment as it would really depend on our needs at the time.

Are there accommodations available for candidates coming from abroad?
While we do not have on-site accommodations available, at your request, we will do our best to assist you in locating accommodations for the duration of the course. Applicants should be aware that it can be very difficult to secure accommodations in Lebanon during the summer (which is the high tourist season here) and that they need to start looking (or notify us that they would like assistance) as early as possible in order to secure reasonable accommodations. The cost of accommodations for one person starts at around $350 for one month and goes up from there depending on whether you are willing to share accommodations and what amenities you require. If you will be travelling with someone else you should multiply the cost times two (or the number of people you are travelling with) to get a general approximation of the cost (although in some cases it can work out to be less expensive)

How do I apply?
Download and complete both application and pre-interview task in your own handwriting, scan them and return them to the attention of our in-house CELTA trainer, Elaine Kniveton at elainek@allcs.edu.lb.  Alternatively, you may fax them to Elaine’s attention on 961-1-510485.

Do you offer the Cambridge CELTYL?
ALLC IH Beirut is an approved CELTYL center. We do not have any CELTYL courses scheduled for 2009

Cambridge CELTYL

The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners is based on the same principals as the CELTA with a focus on Younger Learners in one of three specific age ranges (5-10, 8-13 or 11-16).

CELTYL candidates come from a variety of backgrounds.  They range from qualified teachers of other subjects to recent university graduates to professionals in other fields looking for a career change.  While it is not necessary for candidates to be native English speakers, they should have a standard of English which will enable them to teach at a range of levels.

Candidates are continually assessed throughout the course, based on the following:

Assessment of Teaching Practice
Each candidate teaches for a total of six hours throughout the course at two distinct age ranges, and is assessed on their overall performance when the six hours are completed.

Written Assignments
The course includes 4 written assignments, 2 of which explore different aspects of learning and teaching English at a younger learner level.  One of these involves work on the language system of English, while the other is a reflection on classroom teaching.

Professional Development as a Teacher
Self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses, working as teacher, colleague and employee.

To be successful, candidates must demonstrate effectiveness in all of the above components.  Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded a CELTYL certificate from Cambridge as well as a detailed report on their performance in the above areas.
